DESIGNING SAFE TRAFFIC AND SAVING RESOURCES
Global megatrends such as sustainability and environmental protection have been playing a crucial role in the road marking sector for some time now. Reducing emissions from increasing traffic volumes is a major concern across the world and is a driving factor for innovation in road construction. With DEGAROUTE® proTerra, Röhm is now offering a binder for road markings that contains at least 30 percent recycled methyl methacrylate (RMMA) providing a significantly improved CO2 footprint.
DEGAROUTE® based road markings are solvent-free, reactive systems. They produce almost no volatile organic compounds (VOC) and do not require external heat input during application. With DEGAROUTE® proTerra, Röhm has developed a product for cold plastic characterized by excellent visibility and durability while at the same time offering a resource-saving alternative to conventional binders for road markings.
Laboratory and application tests show that the quality and performance of this innovation is comparable to already established products. The advantages of methacrylate-based road markings remain unchanged: DEGAROUTE® proTerra combines durability, excellent visual and acoustic properties and fast processing with short curing times while saving resources.
Benefits of DEGAROUTE® proTerra 100 in comparison to established reactive resins made from virgin, fossil-based raw materials:
- Minimum 30% recycled methylmethacrylate content from pre- and postconsumer wastestreams according to ISO 14021
- 26% product carbon footprint reduction compared to DEGAROUTE® 465 with Carbon Footprint (GWP100) of 3.4 kgCO2eq./kg
Sustainable offset for:
Cold plastic formulations with
- high storage stability
- excellent processing characteristics
- fast curing even at low temperatures
Flat or textured cold plastic road markings with
- high visibility even at wet nights
- excellent durability even under harsh traffic and climate conditions
SWARCO Road Marking Systems, a global manufacturer of road marking systems, has chosen Röhm’s sustainable binder proTerra for the development of a pioneering new marking material. The first application of the new product was on a 100 square meter bike lane in Darmstadt.
