- High degree of safety and outstanding life cycle assessment for DEGAROUTE® cold-spray plastic

Evonik Industries presents a further development of DEGAROUTE®-based road markings with an even better life cycle assessment. An optimized binder technology improves the environmental compatibility of the product and allows the formulation of cold-spray plastic compounds with a higher filler content but with no effect on the durability of the road marking.
In 2011, Evonik Industries had the environmental effects of various road marking systems investigated in a life cycle assessment (LCA). DEGAROUTE®-based road markings from the Coatings & Additives Business Unit produced outstanding results. The LCA discovered that other marking systems had a roughly 80 percent higher global warming potential than DEGAROUTE®-based cold-spray plastic. Evonik has now exceeded this very good result with its advanced DEGAROUTE®, which reduces the global warming potential determined in the 2011 LCA by a further 13 percent. This is another advantage in a market where environmental aspects play an increasingly important role. For the growing volume of traffic, we need high-quality, durable road markings that do not have a negative impact on the environment.
In the LCA, DEGAROUTE®-based road markings were compared with three other commonly used marking systems: Hot-spray plastic, solvent-based markings, and water-based markings. An analysis was carried out regarding the impact that the products have on the environment during their entire life cyclefrom the raw materials that are used, through production and application, transportation and packaging materials, to disposal or recycling. All the environmental impacts that occur during a ten year period to install and renew the marking on a two-lane, one-kilometer section of road with a median line and a soft shoulder line on each side of the road were analyzed. The result: thanks to the durability of the road marking, DEGAROUTE®-based cold-spray plastic is a very environment-friendly alternative, since it is largely the durability of a road marking that is decisive for its environmental impact, such as its carbon footprint and, consequently, its global warming potential. For example, with average traffic volume, solvent-based paint has to be applied ten times to maintain the marking, while DEGAROUTE®-based cold-spray plastic only has to be applied four times.
