Top 5 Projects from 2016

LEARN MORE ABOUT OTHER GREAT PROJECTS THAT WERE CONSIDERED FOR THE EVONIK ROAD SAFETY AWARD

First Place: Thailand - School Zones
To improve the safety of children in school-zones, the Department of Rural Roads:
  • began their road safety pilot project at Nonthaburi province in 2013.
  • identified speed reduction and visual communication as two key ways to create awareness
  • installed edge lines, colored anti-skid rumble stripes and pedestrian crossings based on MMA cold plastic road markings
  • successfully raised awareness of traffic participants
Since the installation, they have recorded zero accidents and the MMA cold plastic-based road markings remain durable and functional even after 3 years, with no maintenance required.

Second Place: China - School Zones
In Oct. 2012, Chongqing Municipal Government Traffic department made the first School Zone Caring Color Zebra crossing project
  • 4 red and white, anti-slip caring Zebra Crossings (cover an area total about 400 square meters) were applied in front of schools in Chongqing city
  • all located in the intersections where busy traffic causes great potential safety hazard to children.
  • The red and white, anti-slip zebra crossing creates a more noticeable contrast of the marking on the road. It not only provides visual awareness to drivers, but also acts as a pedestrian guide to benefit the students’ safety.
  • Observation statistics showed that the rate of road accident is reduced more than 50% after using a colored zebra crossing.

Third Place: Indonesia – ASL for motorcycles
The number of motorcycle’s population in Indonesia until the end of 2011 reached around 67.83 million units. The huge number of motorcycles showed the changing of traffic flow characteristics and decreased signalized intersection performance. The first of red motorcycle box was implemented at Ahmad Yani-Laswi intersection in Bandung, Indonesia in year 2011.
  • Red box for motorcycle at signalized intersection is designate a space for motorcyclists to wait at a red light. Motorcyclists stop in front of other types vehicles and can proceed through the intersection first when the light turns green.
  • Aim of this project to improve performance of signalized intersections to be more orderly, safely, and smoothly.
  • Data on traffic volume and traffic conflict was collected from before to after implementation of red motorcycle box. Analysis result show that traffic flow rose up to 13% and the traffic conflict felt up to 39%.
  • After 5 years applied the cold plastic road marking, the condition are still in good condition.

Fourth Place: China – anti-blackening markings
As of 2014 Nanning had a population of 6.9M with 4M in its urban area. The city has historically used traditional road markings that have proven to pick up dirty easily. Due to the humid and hot climate, pollution and heavy traffic in city, the markings have become black and unrecognizable, which is seriously affecting the traffic order and appearance of the city.
  • The cold plastic road marking materials have an excellent anti-dirt pickup performance.
  • During the road trial project April 2015, the new cold plastic road marking material was able to stay whiter, and clearly visible, especially in comparison to conventional materials.
  • The project improved visibility under adverse weather and traffic conditions (traffic density 40k/day, temperature of road surface reach 50C degree)
Cold plastic and traditional road markings were applied on the same road and observed their performance over time. Their whiteness comparison:
  • Cold plastic road marking: beginning, 80 -- 1mon later, 45 -- 4mon later, 45 -- 12 mon later, 40.
  • Traditional road marking (thermoplastic): beginning, 70 -- 1mon later, 25 -- 4mon later, 25 -- 12 mon later, 20
In October 2015, another project of about 6,000 sqm of anti-dirt pickup road markings was successful installed in the avenues of Nanning city's downtown.

Fifth Place: Turkey – pedestrian crossings
The objective of this application in Denizli, Turkey, was to increase road safety for pedestrians, drivers and also cyclists. It was implemented at 4 rotary intersections, in front of 26 schools and at 12 intersections. Due to the durable material used, there has been no need to renew the lines since 2013.
Various colors and warning signs were used in this project to expand awareness.
  • First the drivers see the posted speed limit sign
  • The red arrow warns drivers to reduce their speed
  • The blue school crossing sign alerts drivers to increase awareness of the pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road
  • The greater visibility of the road markings during the day, night and inclement weather is provided by using glass beads during the application.
Applications showed great results and, after this project, the number of accidents were dramatically reduced in this area. Especially the feedback received from visually impaired pedestrians shows great success of this project.
